The Chinese character “元” (pronounced as yuan) refers to the beginning of the universe in its primordial state of chaos, during which all things existed but had yet to take shape.

At that stage, all things existed in the universe while nothing had yet taken a definite form.

 

A Chinese saying goes, “Those long divided shall be united; those long united shall be divided.”

中国には、次のような言葉があります。「分かれて久しくなれば必ず合一し、合一して久しくなれば必ずまた分かれる」。
